Written by Zach Lim · Co-FounderIf you've noticed your website traffic dropping lately even though you've done everything SEO is supposed to require — keywords, content, backlinks, all of it — don't rush to blame yourself. The problem might not be that you're doing it wrong. It's that the way people find answers has changed.
People used to type "best web design company Kuala Lumpur" into Google, then click through the results one by one to compare. Now, more and more people just ask ChatGPT or Google's AI Overview directly: "Recommend a few reliable web design companies in Kuala Lumpur." The AI gives a neatly packaged answer on the spot — and the user may make their decision without ever clicking through to your site.
That's why relying on traditional SEO alone isn't enough anymore. You need to understand two new concepts: GEO and AEO.
GEO, short for Generative Engine Optimization, is about making your brand and content easier for generative AI engines — ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overview — to understand, cite, and recommend.
Traditional SEO optimizes for ranking — getting your page onto page one of search results. GEO optimizes for exposure — getting the AI to actually mention your brand by name when it puts together an answer. The techniques aren't identical: clearly structured content, explicit factual statements, and genuinely trustworthy brand information are all traits that make AI more willing to cite you.
AEO, short for Answer Engine Optimization, focuses specifically on the "Q&A" scenario — whether your brand has a shot at becoming part of the actual answer when a user asks an AI a direct question.
The key to good AEO is writing website content in a form that can directly answer a user's question: clear headings, concise paragraphs, structured key points — not one long block of vague marketing copy. AI finds "clearly structured content" much easier to understand, and is far more willing to cite it.
You don't need to rebuild your entire website overnight. Some practical first steps:
SEO, GEO and AEO aren't three things that replace each other — they're three layers of visibility you need to build together. When we build websites for clients, we factor in all three from the start, instead of bolting SEO on after the site's already done.
